Starting on June 13, 1944, London residents all big suffer from a uniquely traumatic experience; the distinctive thumping sound of the flying bomb’s engine as it gets louder and louder, followed by a dead silence as the engine cuts out from lack of fuel, and the agonizing wait to find out where it lands.

Germans constructed four bunkers and 96 bases, stretching from Cotenin, France to the Belgian border, including this one at Bois des Huit-Rues. Construction workers included salaried Germans, French and Belgians, and prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp.
