Those interested in history and are in the Ottawa area are welcome to join our History Event. If you have items to sell\, trade or buy\, bring them along. There will be free tables\, and a bar. SUMMARY:The 'Remember The Somme' History Event
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: The Battle of the Somme was the first bloodbath of the Great War for the British Empire. Day 1 cost 20\,000 British (and Newfoundlander) deaths\, and over the next weeks thousands would fall for minor gains. For the Canadians The Somme would lead to 24\,000 dead\, wounded and missing for a village and a few farmer’s fields. The attack was also the first use of tanks\, and was important for the bloody lessons that were taught. Canada would take The Somme hammering to learn and plan for their next battle for Vimy Ridge. Those interested in history and are in the Ottawa area are welcome to join our History Event. If you have items to sell\, trade or buy\, bring them along. There will be free tables\, and a bar. Let’s save Canadian History! \nCOME ON OTTAWA; JOIN THE 77TH OVERSEAS BATT’N CLUB \nAt 1 pm: “James Fitzpatrick: Eat\, Drink\, and be Merry\, For Tomorrow You Die!”. The Indispensable Role of Alcohol in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In a conflict where the endurance of appalling conditions meant the difference between victory and defeat\, alcohol was an integral component of maintaining a fighting spirit. It bolstered morale\, aided in maintaining discipline\, the facilitation of camaraderie\, and the endurance of harsh battlefield conditions. Grab a pint and settle in to hear the story of how drink helped propel Canada to victory.\nAt 2 pm: Norm will present “The Battle of The Somme”.

SUMMARY:Masters of War: The Canadians in the Great War
DESCRIPTION:Development of the Canadian Corps from inexperienced Colonials to the most effective fighting force on the Western Front. \nNorm Christie outlines the history of the development of the Canadian Corps from the early days in 1915-16 as inexperienced Colonials\, to 1917-18 when they became the most effective fighting force on the Western Front. It started with Canada’s most famous battle at Vimy Ridge\, when\, against all odds\, they captured the strongest German position on the Western Front. Who was responsible for these developments? How did they come about? How did this incredible transformation happen? Norm explains the players and their personalities that made it happen and how their success and confidence brought about changes that made the Canadians completely different to the British and Australian Armies\nAnd how\, after all their sacrifices and accomplishments\, were they forgotten?

SUMMARY:Masters of War; The Canadians in The Great War
DESCRIPTION:Meet Norm Christie at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. \nNorm Christie outlines the history of the development of the Canadian Corps from the early days in 1915-16 as inexperienced Colonials\, to 1917-18 when they became the most effective fighting force on the Western Front. How did this incredible transformation happen? Who were the players and personalities that made it happen? How was it different to the developments within the British and Australian Armies? How was it all forgotten? \nMr. Christie will also update us on the progress of his campaign to recover 44 lost Canadian soldiers at Vimy Ridge. \nBackground\nOn April 9\, 1917 the Canadian Corps\, 100\,000 strong\, attacked the German stronghold of Vimy Ridge. The Canadians drove the enemy from the Ridge and achieved the impossible. But the losses were heavy; 10\,000 casualties\, including 3600 dead. In the face of withering machine gun fire\, maneuvering between the massive mine craters that lined No Man’s Land\, the 16th Canadian Infantry Battalion\, the Canadian Scottish\, attacked\, capturing all their objectives. 100 of the 600 men were either killed or later died of wounds. Canadian burial squads followed the attack\, burying the dead in temporary battlefield cemeteries\, including mine craters. 44 of the Canadian Scottish were buried in a mine crater\, designated CA40. After the war\, exhumation squads reclaimed 1000s of isolated graves\, bringing them into permanent war graves cemeteries. CA40 was designated to be exhumed and moved to Nine Elms\, but there is no evidence of any of the men from CA40 there.\nSearching all the likely cemeteries in the Vimy region also revealed no evidence of the Canadian Scottish graves. \nMilitary historian Norm Christie believes they remain where they were originally buried on the Vimy battlefield in 1917. To give these heroes a proper burial he must first evaluate this dangerous battlefield using GPR and Electronic Analysis to pinpoint CA40. Mr. Christie has been working tirelessly for some 2 years to raise the $110\,000 necessary to pinpoint the location of CA40. This funding will provide for:\n– an engineering team and equipment;documenting the process\n– compensating local farmers;\n– safety and security costs. \nLight refreshment and the bar will be offered.\nStreet parking can be found in the area around the Branch.
