The Battle of the Somme was the first bloodbath of the Great War for the British Empire. Day 1 cost 20,000 British (and Newfoundlander) deaths, and over the next weeks thousands would fall for minor gains.

Hill 70 was one the lesser known victories of the Canadian Corps. It was also Arthur Currieā€™s first battle as Commander of the Corps. It was a brilliant idea, well executed and an example of how Currie did what he needed to do regardless of what the British Generals instructed.
